The Artists Are Frightened

The Artists Are Frightened is divided into three sections: the Skin, the Muscle and the Bone. Each chapter goes into a deeper layer, from general musings, to deeper reflections, social observations, and finally, to a broader commentary on the world we inhabit — and what is to become of it.

  • Thought provoking poetry that I will read over and over again, absolutely loved every second of reading this.

  • This was just page after page of incoherent narcissism. As a proud narcissist and pretend enjoyer of poetry I read it exclusively on public transport to impress the proletariat. My only critique would be that it was difficult (but not impossible) to pleasure myself to. It should have included more pictures and possibly been a pop-up.

  • A beautiful collection of poems that will really stimulate the way you think. The title itself really speaks to the time we are living in. Overall I really enjoyed the author's mind and her insights. The poem Bread was laid out as a poetic cooking recipe which I found to be very clever. Overall this collection of poems has a lot of heart. I can't wait to see where this author ends up and what she writes next. For now I'll keep this one handy on my coffee table.

  • I started reading this on my couch, needed to use the restroom and brought it with me. Whilst doing my business I was delighted with her poignant and personal humor, these short poems are individual journeys taking me to places with double meanings and giving me a mirror into my own thoughts and feelings. I finished up and left the book there, on the back of the toilet. I decided it’ll be my bathroom reader for myself guests (anyone coming over to my house and using the bathroom will see a book of witty poems and think their host, me, is smarter then he actually is, it’s the perfect crime). I found myself going back to the bathroom to read “just one more”, I soon quadrupled my trips to the bathroom. After a couple days I went to the doctor, turns out I have IBS. Love this book, highly recommend. 5 stars.

  • I have been following Alana on Instagram for years and have always adored her poetry so I was thrilled to hear she was releasing her debut collection. And this did not disappoint. Each poem contained in this collection is poignant, sharp, often heartbreaking or hilarious or thought-provoking or cutting or stark or just plain good. I can’t remember the last time I enjoyed a poetry book this much. Probably going to gather all my other poetry books and throw them all away to make more room for what I hope will be many many more to come from Alana.
